Straight Talk: Is That Design Trend You Love Worth It?

Design trends can make or break a property. A style that could all the rage now, might not have a great return on investment when it comes time to sell your home a few years down the road. So, today we discuss what trends will give you the most bang for your buck, and which ones should you steer clear of.

1.       Accent Wallpaper – The trend of bold and printed accent wallpaper walls is something that has caught on fast. Typically, you can find this trend in a smaller space, like the bathroom, but it’s not uncommon to also see it in a bedroom or living room. While you might love the tropical pattern you chose, if you plan to sell, the accent wall might not be the best idea.

Our Vote: STAY AWAY

2.       The Grey and White Trend – This trend has been going on for a while now and can most often be seen in the kitchen. The minimalist design is increasingly popular, and is great when transitioning your home to sell. White is associated with being clean and bright, while grey can be very calming.

3.        Intricate tile – If you’ve been on Instagram lately then you’ve seen some beautiful patterned tiles. They seem to be appearing everywhere from kitchen backsplashes to bathroom floors, but just because it’s hip now, doesn’t mean it translates down the line. Too much going on equals harder to sell.

Our Vote: STAY AWAY

4.       Mixed hardware – If you asked us five years ago our thoughts on mixed hardware in a space we would have said stay away, but this is a trend that has taken on new life. Buyers love charm and personality in a space, without feeling overwhelming by them. Mixed hardware is the perfect way to incorporate that. One finish on your faucet and/or light fixtures, with a different finish on your cabinets makes your space stand out and memorable, in a clever way.
